    From JJobs:

    Salary is $20,000-25,000; paper has a circulation of just under 2,000. Hey, ya gotta start somewhere. Happy 4th, people.

    Ahem ... The good people of Colby prefer to call it "The Oasis on the Plains." In case y'all haven't visited western Kansas, this place is in the middle of the middle of nowhere.

    I actually stayed a night here while on my way West. What a hellhole. I think I rolled in around 8 o'clock, and I couldn't even find a Chili's or Applebee's. Ended up eating at Arby's just off the interstate. "Downtown" looked as though a fire could only improve it.

    And really? An editor AND a part-time reporter too?

    On the plus side, maybe the publisher can introduce you to his brother, Peter. I hear he's a professor.

    An easy 20-minute commute from Colby's suburb, Oakley.

    A description of hell.

    Hell is Liberal; No doubts about it.

    Dodge City is real damn close;

    The Oakley-Colby-Goodland metroplex is hellish, but compares not to the other two villages.

    Western Kansas is hell. No need to clarify further.

    Metroplex. Ha! I laughed out loud at that.

    Dodge City has Mom and Pop's pool hall. Fantastic place to have a Bud at 11 a.m. and record locals talkin' local (man, I hope I still have that tape).

    Ten years ago I stopped in Colby on my way to Denver and ate at a Chinese place called the Big Wong.

    Liberal has King's BBQ. That alone trumps the Oakley-St. Francis-Colby-Hoxie metroplex.
