The Herald-Palladium in St. Joseph, Michigan has an opening for a full-time sports writer and a full-time sports paginator.

We have diverse and competitive high school sports, with teams often making deep tournament runs. We have 25 schools in a three-county circulation area.

There is some college football coverage in the fall, involving Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Western Michigan. In addition, we have a community college (Lake Michigan College) with decent men's and women's basketball teams and a small, private university (Andrews University) with a fairly new collegiate athletic program.

Events hosted in Southwest Michigan include the Senior PGA Championship (every other spring), an Ironman triathlon qualifier, and the RedBud National, a stop on the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship tour.

Pagination experience is more than helpful, as some desk work is part of this position. Sports writers occasionally take photographs, but we do have a staff photographer and a few part-time photo stringers.

The sports paginator position is part of our page design hub, which produces 12 daily newspapers in Michigan and Indiana. There are limited writing opportunities with this position. We paginate with InDesign CS6 and use the latest version of NewsEditPro.

Our sports staff includes myself, two full-time sports writers, two part-time sports writers, a retired sports writer who is a sports correspondent and two sports pagination positions shared with the page design hub. For most of the year, the two sports writing positions alternate weekend work.

Our newsroom has a nice mix of younger folks and seasoned veterans. The work environment is lively and collaborative.

Both positions pay $15/hour. Cost of living isn't too high, and affordable places to live can be found in St. Joseph and surrounding communities. St. Joseph is about 100 miles from Chicago via car, and about 2 1/2 hours west of Detroit. Driving to Ann Arbor or Lansing is about two hours, and we're a bit over a half-hour north of South Bend.

Interested applicants can email resume, cover letter, writing and page layout samples to newsroomjobs@thehp.com. For more information, feel free to contact me at jmitchell@thehp.com.

You had me hooked until you mentioned the $15 per hour.
