The Recorder, an award-winning daily newspaper in Amsterdam, is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled full-time sports reporter to cover local sporting events and write features.

Generally, people in the Amsterdam area are passionate about local sports — the high school football team routinely draws 5,000 fans to a home game, and the Amsterdam Mohawks led the New York Collegiate Baseball League in attendance — and The Recorder is the primary source for local sports news.

Candidates must have a bachelor's degree and college, weekly or daily newspaper writing experience.

Candidates with photography and/or editing experience will be given preference.

Amsterdam is centrally located in upstate New York, 30 minutes west of Albany.

We offer a competitive salary and great benefits. For immediate consideration email your resume, cover letter and writing clips to Geoffrey Dylong, Director of News Operations, at geoff@recordernews.com. If necessary, mail your items to The Recorder, 1 Venner Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010.

Anyone know how big the circulation is or what it might pay?

They posted this job in August. http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/threads/59577/

This is actually a new posting and not related to the one back in August. A 21-year veteran of the sports staff will be leaving next month. They've had very little turnover in sports. Pay is actually better than most chains in this circulation class. This is a family-owned daily with a coverage area that includes Montgomery and Fulton counties. The city of Amsterdam is a sports-crazy town which explains why the publication has 12 pages for a Sunday and 8-9 pages on the other days of the week. The beat also includes the Saratoga Race Course during the summer months.

Wait! Did I read this right?

Amsterdam, NY, an 8k daily, has 8-9 pages for sports? While the once-mighty Atlanta Journal Constitution has 4?!?!?!

    How ass backwards is that?

The Recorder is a daily tabloid so a 12-page sports section goes down to about eight pages in a broad sheet. Hard to believe the Atlanta Journal Constitution has cut back on sports coverage. Haven't seen the print edition in quite a few years, but remember it being a quality edition.

Still, tabloid or no, that's unbelievable space for a paper that size. The 33k AM daily I used to work for just has four pages most days for sports.
