Description: The Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise, a Hearst newspaper with more than 100,000 daily readers, seeks an energetic and adventurous sports reporter who has a web-first approach and can still come back with a fresh perspective for the print edition.

We are not heavy on traditional game coverage, but instead seek unique angles and creative ways to tell stories.

Our success is noted by the Associated Press Sports Editors. We have eight top-10 APSE mentions in the last two years, including a top-10 Sunday section.

High school football is the centerpiece of our operation. We frequently run sports stories and features on 1A, and our Friday and Saturday editions are loaded with high school coverage. High school football games here can draw close to 10,000 fans. This area also produces a handful of professional athletes – Jamaal Charles of the Kansas City Chiefs, Jay Bruce of the Cincinnati Reds and Kendrick Perkins of the Oklahoma City Thunder, to name a few.

Beaumont is located about 90 miles east of Houston, near the Texas/Louisiana border along the Gulf Coast. Our writers can make occasional trips to Houston for Astros, Texans or Rockets games. Two of our reporters staffed the 2011 Final Four in Houston to assist the Houston Chronicle with its web coverage.

Lamar University is the main university in Beaumont. The men’s basketball team reached the NCAA tournament in 2011, and the school revived its football program in 2010, after the school cut the program in 1989. We staff most home and away games for football and basketball, but again, we don’t always do things the traditional way.

We seek a candidate with at least two years of professional experience, but exceptional college graduates will be considered.

A desire to write about the outdoors would be a bonus.

Send a cover letter, resume, references and several clips to:

Chris Dabe, assistant sports editor, Beaumont Enterprise, P.O. Box 3071, Beaumont, TX 77704 or CDabe@BeaumontEnterprise.com.

I've worked with Jon - sad to see him go - and Chris Dabe for the past year and they are fantastic to work with and have some very talented writers on staff. Encourage all to apply.

I was working in the area when Lamar University ditched football years ago. Never thought they would bring it back.

Gina Mizell, OSU reporter for The Oklahoman, worked here about a year ago. She does a great job. Seems like a nice little launch pad.

Kind of a bold assumption to go multiplying circulation by average household size, isn't it? Or is this attempting to include online traffic, too?
