    Description:

    Sports reporter/Non-exempt Guild position

    Position summary:

    Primary duties for the sports reporter – Cover high school and other sports stories in an accurate, balanced and fair manner. Also act as Night Sports Editor two shifts a week, Wednesday and Sunday. This position is deadline- and detail-oriented. It is primarily Wednesday through Sunday.

    Responsibilities:

    · Produce online and print content including tweets, Facebook and blog posts, stories and briefs. Stories include dailies and weekend pieces as well as contributing to periodic projects.

    · Maintain and build a strong, deep source base.

    · Help populate the SJ-R Facebook page and Twitter feeds.

    · As NSE, slot stories, edit copy and write headlines, ship content to central design desk and monitor/check pages as they come back for prepress. Ship content to online. Troubleshoot as needed.

    · All other duties as assigned.

    Requirements:

    · College degree and minimum 3 years experience.

    · Strong reporting and writing skills.

    · Experience as a night sports editor and running the desk.

    · Solid understanding of AP style. Knowledge of the Springfield community and surrounding areas a plus.

    · Good verbal and written communication skills.

    · Good time management skills.

    · Able to learn current processing and operating platforms (training will be provided).

    · High comfort level with and demonstrated ability using social media.

    · Detail- and deadline-oriented with proven ability to multi-task.

    · Valid driver’s license and proof of a good driving record.



    The State Journal-Register currently offers the following benefits:
