    The Union Democrat is seeking a full time sports reporter to become a part of our award winning news team.

    The successful applicant for this job will be assigned to cover the local sports scene for a daily newspaper published Tuesday through Saturday. Job duties include covering sports across ten school districts including four high schools. Assignments include gameday coverage, follow up stories as well as feature sports writing.

    Quality writing, strong interpersonal skills and a passion for sports are required. The ideal candidate can meet tight deadlines, is hard working and has a good understanding of a variety of sports.

    If you value local news and becoming an important member of a small community newspaper staff while living in the scenic and historic Sierra Foothills then this is the perfect opportunity.

    $20-$25K? Might be a stretch here. Up in the hills a little east of Modesto, a few hours from SF and Sacramento as well.
    It's not mentioned in the job description, but Columbia JC's had a strong basketball program in the past.

    And, of course, just 15 minutes from Lake Tahoe.

    A couple of things about this. I note with interest that the applications go to a publisher rather than a sports editor or even managing editor. There is also the fact that, according to the ad, this is a 5-day-a-week paper.

    This pay rate is shameful. Yes, I know paying reporters terrible wages is a time-honored tradition that newspapers are perversely proud of. What makes this particularly shameful is that for a 40-hour week, the rate is $10.00 per hour. Next year, that will be the minimum wage in California. How can a reporter get any respect from the community when they are paid at this rate.

    The fact that the name of the paper is the Union Democrat seems particularly ironic.
