    Company: Observer Media Group
    Position:
    Reporter
    Location:
    Sarasota, Florida
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Negotiable

    Description:
    Sports Reporter Wanted

At the Observer, we don’t write gamers. Instead, we focus on the stories behind the score. We want the human interest angle behind the state championship volleyball team — or the football team that didn’t win a single game all season. We want stories readers will love to read, even if they don’t follow sports.

The Observer group is seeking a sports reporter to cover seven high schools in the Sarasota, Fla., area. As a weekly, we use our website and social media to push out scores and timely updates, while in print we work to tell the stories that drive the drama on the field. We want a reporter who can navigate through the cliches often found in sports coverage to tell us more about the players and the dynamics going on beyond the games. This person will also be able to take ownership of the sports beat and cultivate relationships with coaches to get the good stuff readers can’t find anywhere else. We want someone who loves sports and the stories involved and is passionate about trying new things to craft exciting coverage each week.

On this sports beat, the possibilities are endless for great stories, new approaches and interesting packages. Our ideal candidate will be a super multitasker who can manage his or her time well between all the different sports and schools. This person will also be a self-starter who can do it all — take pictures, write stories, tweet and maybe even shoot a video. Attention to detail, collaborative attitude, great sense of humor, knowledge of AP style and clean copy are must-haves.

The job entails writing and shooting pictures for features of various lengths in print each week, covering games and writing highlight recaps and posting score updates and news on social media and the website.

At the Observer, we do what it takes to get the job done, which means this position may also cover news or community events as needed.

If you’re a sports reporter excited about the opportunity to craft your own beat and become the go-to person for sports in our area, email a resume, cover letter and 3-5 clips to Deputy Executive Editor Jessica Luck at jluck@yourobserver.com. No phone calls please. Pay is competitive and commensurate with experience. Full benefits are included.
