    Description:

Are you a versatile sports reporter? Ready to try something different in journalism? Meet OZY.

Founded by former MSNBC and CNN anchor Carlos Watson, OZY is a new kind of daily news and information site that brings “educated but edgy” readers up to speed on what happened over the past 24 hours, and then vaults them ahead by previewing six to eight new people, places, ideas and trends each day. Our goal is to offer truly forward-looking global content, designed for easy consumption across devices, in a sleek, visual style.

We’re a Series A digital media startup with a big, ambitious vision: to help people see more, do more and be more. We’re highly focused on delivering the new and the next so our readers will be ahead of the curve. Here’s some of the coverage about OZY: New York Times, Fortune, Die Welt.

We are looking for a smart, prolific sports reporter with a background that includes radio and TV broadcasting, who is comfortable doing profiles, trend stories, data-driven articles and thought pieces, as well as advances and gamers. If you can assign and edit, and have a strong list of potential OZY contributors, that’s even better. We publish only a handful of stories a day, so each one needs to be a gem: relevant, well-rounded and flavorful, with a clear “Why You Should Care” element.

Ideal candidates have extensive broadcast and Web experience, and are able to create TV and radio segments as well as text stories. Video production experience is a strong plus. OZY covers a range of sports: national and international, team and individual, mainstream and specialty. You’ll be able to tell our readers about everything from rising college basketball stars and Moneyball 2.0 to England’s top goalie, a badass Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter and a 21st-century extreme explorer. You should have a flair for spotting trends and rising stars months ahead of the pack and developing/shaping stories that vault OZY readers ahead. You also have a demonstrated ability to deliver engaging headlines and other smart packaging.

You are passionate about delivering elite content, open to learning and love a fast-paced, always-on environment. We have high standards — our partners include USA Today, NPR and other top media outlets — so you must have a demonstrated ability to deliver consistently high-quality work. You must also demonstrate ease and experience using a CMS, ensuring your stories are beautifully presented to users.

OZY is based in Mountain View, Calif., so being local is a plus. However, we are a distributed workplace and will also consider strong candidates who live outside the San Francisco Bay Area.

    Our ideal candidate:

    • Has been wishing for a while now that something like OZY would come along.

    • Has five-plus years at a high-quality media company, with significant online and some broadcast experience. Startup experience a plus.

    • Can assign, edit and rewrite as needed.

    • Has extensive contacts in the sports world, and can recruit and develop contributors with forward-looking ideas and sophisticated style.

    • Delivers high-quality content at a fast clip.

    • Is highly organized and plans ahead, but is also agile and able to turn on a dime as news dictates.

    • Is creative and always looking for ways to improve, whether it’s the approach, product or presentation.

    • Values a news hook but can set the agenda, not just follow it.

Sound like you? Then send us a résumé and cover letter to editorial.jobs@ozy.com, explaining how you’d help us deliver the kind of stories that will help our readers see more, be more and do more.
