If you want to learn the skills needed to be successful in journalism, this is the place to start.

The Post Register of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is looking for an entry-level sports reporter. Applicants should have strong reporting skills, an absolute commitment to accuracy and a passion for high school sports. The sports staff covers 21 high schools (focused mainly on six to eight schools close to the city), along with minor league baseball (June to September), Idaho State University (about 45 minutes south of Idaho Falls) and plenty of recreational sports.

The paper, a regional daily with a circulation of 18,000, has a long history of teaching the trade and placing stars in larger markets. Post Register alumni have moved on to Sports Illustrated, the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Arizona Republic, the Bakersfield Californian, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Salt Lake Tribune and the Idaho Statesman.

Idaho Falls is eastern Idaho's regional hub for health care, banking, shopping and transportation with numerous cultural and outdoor opportunities. It's less than two hours from Yellowstone and the Tetons and minutes away from world-class fly-fishing, hiking, skiing and hunting. The region is frequently named on top 10 lists for quality of life.

Applicants should submit resume, cover letter, references and writing samples to Managing Editor Monte LaOrange via email at mlaorange@postregister.com. No calls, please.

Big area for prep sports, and as the ad notes, they cover Idaho State somewhat. A pretty decent newspaper for its size ... lots of agriculture coverage, because that's what they have in Eastern Idaho. Cost of living is reasonable. Also a large area for LDS church, with a large temple right along the river (near the "falls").

Probably a good place for someone starting out in the business.
