The Monitor, a 41,000-circulation newspaper located in McAllen, Texas, is looking for a sports reporter/designer to join our staff. The Monitor sports staff covers beats ranging from high school football, the NBA Development League, the University of Texas-Pan American and other sports. High school sports are prominent in our section and drive RGVSports.com.

McAllen-Edinburg-Mission, one of the five fastest growing areas of the nation, is an exciting market where local news regularly makes the national wires. There is never a lack of news here and we deal day in and day out with some of the hottest issues facing the nation.

If you have what it takes to do the job, we offer a competitive salary and benefits, including health and dental insurance and 401K that has a company match. We also offer an outstanding working environment in our modern, 104,000-square-foot building with its state-of-the-art presses and equipment.

Anyone interested in the position should be well-versed in sports in general, and have knowledge of the use of the Web. Also, because everyone shares desk duties, the applicant should be fluent in InDesign.

In addition to the above requirements, the applicant should also be able to know his/her way around social media (Facebook, Twitter) as it is a big part of the job at The Monitor.

Recent college graduates will be considered, but professional experience is preferred.

Please send samples of your work along with a professional resume and cover letter to sports editor Peter Rasmussen at prasmussen@themonitor.com or via fax at (956) 683-4401. Samples can also be mailed to 1400 E. Nolana Loop, McAllen, Texas, 78502. Feel free to email Peter or call him at 956-683-4448 with any questions.

We are looking to move on this quickly.

Dang Peter. Accepting phone calls? That's highly unusual. You don't say anything about needing to be bilingual, which I guess would be helpful in your locale.

Area has grown a lot since I lived there in the 1990s, with the addition of the minor league basketball and hockey teams. UT-Pan American may have regressed a bit after leaving the Sun Belt Conference and is rarely competitive in men's baketball. I'm not sure how much they travel with the team anymore.

Lot of interest in high school sports, although the way Texas is set up those schools are grouped in the same region with the schools from San Antonio and Austin, which makes it real hard to go deep into the playoffs in most sports because the other schools just have bigger, faster, stronger student athletes more often than not.
