    Company: Record Searchlight
    Position: Sports Reporter
    Location: Redding, California
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Not Specified
    Ad Expires: March 4, 2009
    Job ID: 1015528
    Website: http://www.redding.com

    Description:
Join an award-winning sports section in a recreation area that can't be matched. We're a progressive 30,000 circulation daily with a small but hard-working staff. We're looking for a five-tool player. We want someone with major-league writing skills who can sniff out enterprise stories, as well as a team player adept in the digital world. The right person would have video and multimedia skills, in addition to copy editing, pagination and page-design prowess. Since local is our bread and butter, a passion for prep sports is a must. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. West Coast applicants preferred.

Live and work in one of the most beautiful and most affordable communities in California. While the job entails nights and weekends, your mornings are free to explore one of the country's great recreation areas, with fishing, camping, boating, hiking, skiing and more golf courses per capita than anywhere in California. All this and less than four hours to Sacramento and San Francisco.

We offer competitive pay and excellent benefits, including three weeks paid time off during (not after) your first year, 401K with company match, employee stock purchase plan, and pension. We are an equal opportunity employer and we offer a drug free workplace.

To apply, complete a profile at www.scripps.com/careers/jobsearch. Apply to requisition number 227.

The area is reasonablly affordable, and the outdoor setting is fabulous, but there just isn't much of interest to cover here. OK preps in a self-contained region, with no four-year colleges or even minor league sports.

Been through there a few times. Has a distinct feeling of hell.

And, yeah, not much beyond preps unless you are willing, and allowed, to travel.

The leading story on their website is that retail space available for lease in Shasta County has jumped to 22 percent, up from 5 percent a year ago. Me thinks that isn't exactly a good sign.

There is a Big League Dreams complex in Redding, which means tons of youth tournament baseball.

Yes, youth tournaments ... for all of those hours of our lives that we'll wish we could have back later.
