The Minot (N.D.) Daily News has an immediate opening for a full-time sports reporter.

The new hire will primarily cover high school sports during the school year and American Legion baseball in the summer. There will also be occasional opportunities to pitch in with coverage of Minot State University (Division II school in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference), the Minot Minotauros (junior hockey team in the North American Hockey League) and Nodak Speedway (local dirt track racing).

We've got a three-man sports staff here (editor and two full-time writers). We shoot our own photos and have just recently been relied on to pitch in with page design about once per week — usually on Sunday, which is our slow day. Photography and/or design experience isn't a must, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Minot is a rapidly growing city of about 50,000. I believe projections have the population exceeding 60,000 in a few years. There's plenty to do here, and we're a young staff. I like to think we make it a fun place to work.

We have a strong history of sending young writers to larger papers. Former sports editor Daniel Allar left in January to take a job at the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press. He is now the University of Evansville athletics beat writer. Former sports writer Mike Kraft departed last month to accept a position at the Sun Journal in Lewiston, Maine.

We'd like to get someone in here either before or shortly after Thanksgiving, so we'll look to move quickly on this. Feel free to PM me with questions. Here is the JJobs link: http://www.journalismjobs.com/job-listings/1486807

Pleased to announce that John Denega, a recent graduate of the University of Wyoming, has filled this opening.
