Sports Reporter - Hickory (NC) Daily Record

The Hickory Daily Record seeks a hard-charging, enterprising reporter to join its award-winning staff as a sports reporter.

The HDR, a 12,000-circulation daily (15K on Sundays), needs a reporter who can cover a variety of sports, keep statistics, and have interest in both game coverage and feature writing. We need a reporter who is comfortable churning out daily copy, compiling roundups of games five nights a week, and assist with budgets. We need somebody who is accurate and passionate, and who is well-versed in social media and the new digital era of journalism.

We want somebody who can do it all.

The ideal candidate will have experience at a daily newspaper, but candidates with extensive college experience (school newspaper/internships) or reporters looking to make the jump from a smaller community newspaper are encouraged to apply. Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently.

Hickory, N.C., is a city of about 40,000 people, and the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton metro area has a population base of 365,000 people. The HDR is owned by Berkshire Hathaway Media, and the opportunity for advancement exists for a talented journalist. Our company owns daily newspapers in Greensboro, N.C.; Winston-Salem, N.C.; Richmond, Va.; and Omaha, Neb. – among many others.

Our compensation package includes: base salary ($24,000 to $26,000), comprehensive benefits (medical, dental, vision, life & disability) and 401k with Company match.
