The Monitor, a 41,000-circulation newspaper located in McAllen, Texas, is looking for a sports reporter/designer to join our staff. The Monitor sports staff covers beats ranging from high school football, minor league hockey, NBA Development League, the University of Texas-Pan American and other sports. High school sports are prominent in our section and drive RGVSports.com.

Anyone interested in the position should be well-versed in sports in general, and have knowledge of the use of the Web. Also, because everyone shares desk duties, the applicant should be fluent in InDesign.

In addition to the above requirements, the applicant should also be able to know his/her way around social media (Facebook, Twitter) as it is a big part of the job at The Monitor.

Recent college graduates will be considered, but professional experience is preferred.

Please send samples of your work along with a professional resume and cover letter to sports editor Peter Rasmussen at prasmussen@themonitor.com or via fax at (956) 683-4401. Samples can also be mailed to 1400 E. Nolana Loop, McAllen, Texas, 78502. Please no phone calls. Feel free to email Peter with any questions.

We are looking to move on this quickly.

Fourth-cheapest place to live in the country in 2011 according to Business Weekly. Of course there are reasons.

Used to be a college SID down there. The Monitor was a pretty decent paper and travelled to all the men's basketball road games for UTPA. Don't know if they still do or not. Not many people still there from those days.

The scene has expanded in recent years and things like the internet combat the sense of geographic isolation. Still it's high schools first and foremost. And, of course, being along the US/Mexico border, the language and culture are different than other places.

Still, not a bad second or third career stop for the right person.
