Dear God, I interviewed here out of college. It was my first interview and I did not take the job, which was actually an arts position.

Casino town. Used to be serviced by Casino Express Airlines, which flew to a number of cities every two weeks or so and brought in senior citizens to gamble. I was the only one under 60 on the flight into town.

Friendly people there, but it was wayyyyyy too desert/deserted for me. When you leave town, they tell you that you must have a full tank of gas and bottled water in your car because there's NOTHING nearby.

Beautiful scenery, though. While on my interview, they showed me the "houses of ill repute," so the town has that going for it.

About 6 hrs. to Reno, including a trip through the town once called the "armpit of America," Battle Mountain. Of course, from Reno it's 15 minutes to you-know-where ...

Well, it beats Winnemucca and it's not quite 6 hours to Reno ... more like 4 hours to Reno and 3 hours to Salt Lake City.

As for Battle Mountain ... there is a hill outside of town that appropriately has BM prominently displayed in 40-foot-tall letters reminding all passersby they are, indeed, in the bowels of America.

Elko is a small city, but has a junior college (don't know if it even has sports other than rodeo) and a few of the trappings of moderate towns on the freeway with nothing of note nearby -- a few chains restaurants and ready access to booze and gambling.

I could think of worse places to live and try to launch a career ... but not many
