The Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, Va., is seeking a sports writer. Your duties would include both writing and desk work (such as pagination two or three nights a week), and you'd be expected to tweet, do podcasts and contribute to our websites. Your one specific beat would be Division III football and basketball, but you'd also be the No. 2 high school sports writer. There also would be plenty of general assignment sports stories. We have five full-time staffers in Sports, and we prefer people who are news-oriented in their attitude. Harrisonburg is a college town (James Madison University is the biggest of three colleges in the immediate area) in the Shenandoah Valley about two hours from D.C. This is essentially an entry-level job, and you'd have an advantage if you did significant work at your college paper and had a good internship. Send resumes and clips by email only (csimmons@dnronline.com). No phone calls, please.

Seems like these are all entry-level jobs in Harrisonburg, but from what I've seen on here comment-wise the paper's pretty good.

    Who's leaving?

This position was posted almost exactly one year ago (May 2013). The SE replied with a copy&paste email saying the paper had received more than 200 applicants.

Has anyone got any updates on the status of this job?
I applied for this position about three weeks ago, but I haven't gotten an e-mail or anything from
    the Daily News-Record.

Is the search still ongoing or have they filled the position?

No idea the status, but Matthew Stoss left to pursue other interests, and Matt Jones took over for Stoss on the JMU football beat. Matt worked a mix of DIII colleges and high schools before that.
