The Courier, a 36,000-circulation Lee Enterprises newspaper that publishes Sunday through Friday, has an opening for an experienced Sports Writer/Sports Page Designer.

The Courier is a Drug Free Employer requiring pre-employment drug testing. The Courier (www.WCFCourier.com) and Lee Enterprises (www.Lee.net) are Equal Opportunity Employers.

Cedar Falls is home to University of Northern Iowa, and the Courier is the home paper for them.

One of the staffers, Jim Nelson, recently was honored as the national wrestling writer of the year, so whomever fills this spot need not worry about being assigned to that sport. Sports staff currently has five persons.

They may restructure beats, but the guy who left covered Iowa State football in the fall, Northern Iowa men's basketball in the winter and the Waterloo Bucks (a collegeiate level wooden bat team) in the summer. He left for a writing job with Fox Sports North in the Twin Cities - where most of his family is located. There will probably be some desk work required, but the sports editor is very good about giving each staff member plenty of writing opportunities. As somebody stated, Jim Nelson does the majority of wrestling coverage for this publication - high school and college.

Curious how this paper handles Friday night football without a Saturday edition.

The local TV station gets them back together on Saturday night to re-enact the last two plays of the game? [/crossthreading]

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of the Friday football game stories go online and then there's a recap in Sunday's edition.

Yes, they run full-fledged stories and photos online late Friday night. Then they devote a page or two in Sunday's paper to Friday night's action. It's not ideal, but they do a pretty good job considering the situation they are dealt.
