    That doesn't sound cost effective.

I was very excited about any or all of these jobs until I just saw the "no relocation" line in this thread.
That definitely takes me out of the running.

I'm with BoundforBoston. In these times, to hire someone to write online when you have someone writing for print is at best redundant. Are both traveling with team? The lesser of those two can't have much job security at all.

I have gone through the entire process of applying and did not find anything that said "no relocation." In fact one of the questions in the application is, "Are you willing to relocate if you are not in the Syracuse area," did I misread something?

He means they won't pay you to relocate. You'll be completely out of pocket.

I was laid off by one of the sister papers. Two weeks later I received a phone call by the recruitment company to apply for the same job I was laid off from. I never pursued it but from talking from some of the new hires before my layoff was official (we worked four more months before the change became official, plus were given a good severance package so I can't be too mad at them) the pay would have been significantly lower.

Wasn't sure if anyone paid relocation anymore. I know a lot of places do not.

steveu - They're at the bottom of the resume so they got them anyway. I don't think the headhunting agency called them, just reviewed what people sent in and said, "Eh, he don't look too bad."

mrbigles01 - The woman who interviewed me actually sent me an email before setting up the phone call to say, "Hey, they're not paying for relocation - will this change your stance on the job?" She did let me know up front but it wasn't in the application process.

  9. I think the outside recruitment agency is misinformed about the SMG's strategy. From my experience with NOLA, I would take everything the recruiter says with a huge grain of salt until you get to talk to the real people inside the organization (which comes fairly late in the game).

These jobs sound fine except you have to live in one of the worst places on the planet to do them.

Just wanted to give an update and clear up a few things (and bump this thread back to the top).

I was hired a few weeks ago for that top spot, college sports editor. Also filled are the GA reporter and community engagement specialist. There still are two openings:

    SU basketball/football writer: http://jobs.syracuse.com/jobs/sports-reporter-su-basketball-football-syracuse-ny-52164803-d

    SU football writer: http://jobs.syracuse.com/jobs/sports-reporter-su-football-syracuse-ny-52164804-d

We've received a lot of interest on both openings from some talented folks, and if you've applied, you're still in the mix. We're making one last push before we pull the trigger.

OK, to clear up some things:

    - There are not two sets of writers. Everyone will write for the web. The newspaper folks will grab their stories off the web.

    - The pay is substantially more than $30K. Your salary will be determined by experience and other factors, but that $30K number is silly.

    - There will be two basketball writers, two football writers and one hybrid. You'll work hard, but you won't be beaten into the ground.

    - I wasn't paid for relocation. I think being paid for relocation is pretty rare in our business these days. I will say, however, that I'm having a house built in a beautiful neighborhood on a modest editor's salary (and I'm the only income in my house). Yes, it snows here -- a lot -- but the cost of living is awesome.

I know I've been here for something like 17 days, but these are pretty exciting times. New approach. New building. It's a great opportunity.

Follow the links and apply. And if you do, be sure to link to some exceptional work you've done (blogs, multimedia projects, videos), not just the usual stuff. Knock our socks off.

Feel free to email (hdomin@syracuse.com) or PM me if you have any questions.
