If you go by start of the season year for basketball, you could include Boston in 2007 and L.A. in 1981.

I call BS on that. The Patriots won for the 2004 season. The championship happened to be contested a few weeks later.

What about 1948? Indians in the Series and the Browns won the AAFC.

For what it's worth, in reference to the original post, the Sporting News once selected "Los Angeles-Anaheim" as "America's best sports city."

And, yes, it is one market.

For what it's worth, this is what I came up with:

    2004-Boston-Patriots/Red Sox
    2002-Los Angeles-Lakers/Angels
    2000-New York-Devils/Yankees
    1989-San Francisco/Oakland-49ers/Athletics
    1988-Los Angeles-Lakers/Dodgers
    1979-Pittsburgh-Steelers/Pirates
    1969-New York-Jets/Mets
    1956-New York-Yankees/Giants(NFL)
    1952-Detroit-RedWings/Lions
    1938-New York-Yankees/Giants(NFL)
    1935-Detroit-Tigers/Lions
    1933-New York-Rangers/Giants(MLB)
    1928-New York-Rangers/Yankees
    1927-New York-Yankees/Giants (NFL)

As buckweaver pointed out, the Patriots did win their second championship in the 2004 calendar year so their good.

The reason for the list is that the Steelers won the Superbowl in the 2009 calendar year. The Penguins have a chance to win the Stanley Cup this year as well.

That's a more satisfactory post from where I stand. :)
