This is my old job. I am in the process of transitioning to be the Daily News city editor, a transition that will move along a lot faster once we can bring someone on board.

Any questions, feel free to DM or email john.casper@lee.net.

The Winona Daily News is seeking a hands-on sports editor who will build on our legacy of comprehensive coverage of local high school, small college and community sports.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for local sports, a proven ability to tell stories that go beyond stats and figures and the time management skills to juggle writing, editing and planning a daily sports section.

The Daily News covers 12 high schools in two states — our local schools consistently contend for conference and state titles — as well as NCAA Division II Winona State University and NCAA Division III Saint Mary’s University. There is also the dirt racing track at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway, a well-known triathlon, and a number of local youth and community sports events that require coverage.

The sports editor will lead a department that includes two part-time employees and a handful of stringers and freelancers. An eye for design and effective communication skills are key as the sports editor will have to communicate with a regional design center for daily production of the sports section. The Daily News works closely with other River Valley Media Group members, including the La Crosse Tribune and Chippewa Herald to share the workload.

The Daily News carries the same rich history as its community: It dates back to 1855 when Minnesota was still a territory, and is the second-oldest continuously published newspaper in the state. Today, the Daily News takes pride in its digital-first newsroom, with all reporters and editors engaged in producing fresh and robust local content in new ways, while simultaneously dedicated to a strong print edition that reaches several thousand readers seven mornings a week across the region. Winona features a dynamic arts and outdoor recreation scene in an appealing location along the Mississippi River two hours southeast of the Twin Cities.

We offer a competitive salary and benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan and more.

There's probably a Pulitzer waiting to be had here whenever someone breaks the story on that huge Winona State scandal.
