-- A little background on the job. This is a Heartland shop that's been through some major transition during the past year. Practically everyone in the newsroom left at one time (including the SE) to start their own weekly newspaper a couple of blocks away. The Union County News has a major following on Facebook and is hoping to turn into a daily soon. Nobody got along with the publisher and that, among other things, led to the mutiny. One staff writer stayed and became the editor and they hired an entire new staff. Union prints its paper in the nearby town of Newberry, along with all of the other Heartland papers in the area. The beat includes a couple of high schools, but primarily Union County High School, a 4-A school with a pretty good local following. There's also Whitmire Community School, the smallest public high school in the state that plays football. Whitmire is a wonderful little community that shuts down on Friday nights in the fall...home or away. The pay is what it is...but I used to live nearby and almost bought a 5 bedroom, 3-bath in Whitmire that needed a little love but not a lot for 26K.

    It's a Heartland paper...and the publisher has a horrible rep...but it's a job.

So, this is a one-man shop?

yeah definitely a one-man gig, typically 1-full inside page and occasionally a jump. Also...I know they don't print everyday, but I can't remember if they don't print Sunday and Monday or just Monday.

This is the second Heartland paper that's had a staff walk out and form another paper. It had happened up here when some staffers from the Elkin Tribune and Mount Airy News started their own paper, the Surry Messenger. That didn't end up too well as the Messenger folded earlier this year.
