The Charleston Gazette-Mail, at the center of West Virginia’s enthusiastic sports landscape, is seeking a sports editor.

Our sports section appeals to rabid West Virginia Mountaineer fans, loyal Marshall University fans and to those who cheer for their local high schools. Charleston is the home of minor league baseball’s West Virginia Power and to the state high school basketball and baseball tournaments, as well as the state track meet.

The sports editor might cover events, produce features or write columns but is primarily focused on helping other members of the staff succeed and also ensuring interesting content for print and online.

    The sports editor also:

    • organizes and directs the staff of 9 and sets priorities for coverage.

    • communicates with the visuals editor and graphic artist regarding their involvement with the section.

    • works with writers through reporting, writing, and the editing process to improve copy.
The sports editor should embrace the use of social media and encourage other staff members to use it to communicate meaningfully with readers and West Virginia sports fans. This position is likely to require evening and weekend work.

Anyone know anything about or anyone in this shop?

  3. Brad is a GREAT guy. And that's a fun gang.
If you want to go on to bigger and better things, this is a great stop. The Gaz/Mail is good paper that can take you to the next level. The previous SE's went to work for Marshall U.
Or You could stay there for the remainder of your career. There's a lot to do in and around Charleston.

Visited Charleston last month to see my buddy, who is the outgoing SE. Really cool town. Some awesome bars/restuarants and plenty of outdoor activities if you're into that. Also, there's a casino just outside of town. Really neat place.

You have to wonder if posting this gig is merely a formality since they already have an assistant SE there

Yeah sure. But they also had an ASE at my previous job and went outside. It actually was the second time in a row they did that so who knows.

I don't know. I put my stuff in and Brad was pretty enthusiastic. This sounds like a fantastic gig. I definitely wouldn't mind overseeing the paper of record for West Virginia. (And dammit, I could work for the Gazette-Mail! lol)

It does sound bit desperate to pine for a job on here. Don't be too eager for the job.

LOL... no guys, I've been around these parts long enough to not appear that desperate. Charleston is a nice area and there is a lot to do. Major cities not too far away. Just ready for a change.
