    Salary: $20,000 to $25,000
The Middletown Press is looking for a self-motivated, sports-minded journalist to join its "digital first" newsroom as the Assistant Sports Editor. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

    * Reporting at live sporting events, specifically high school sports
    * Shooting video clips at events with the ability to quickly upload/embed to the web
    * Updating the Middletown Press' sports web page with new and relevant content
    * Utilizing social media and other web-based tools to publicize web content
    * Recording game scores from coaches on a nightly basis and turning them into a legible scoreboard and roundup story for both the print and web editions.
    * Writing feature stories about local athletes

Candidate must have the ability to work night/weekend hours. Qualified applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field. Sports reporting experience is required, while experience in digital media and social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) is strongly preferred. Experience in photography is a plus.

If interested, please send a resume, cover letter and 3-5 writing samples to Sports Editor Dan Podheiser at dpodheiser@middletownpress.com.

Do you get SNAP and Medicaid application forms in your HR packet on the first day?

    1. It's for an ASE. In what is, IIRC, a 2-man sports department. Maybe someone else can confirm/deny.

    2. It's in one of the most expensive states in the lower 48.

    3. It's Middletown, so maybe you can crash with some hot Wesleyan co-eds.

    4. Scenic, hard-hittin' New Britain is a half-hour away.

    4. If you are in a great amount of despair, there's a nice, tall bridge over the Connecticut River. Just sayin'.

Like someone who wrote about me in another thread, Cullen9 is just bitter.

(Seriously, what's wrong with telling people what is really going on at these newspapers, especially when it's just not "bitter" person?)

And correct me if I'm wrong, I believe this is a JRC shop ....

And if it is .... well, you know.

Some reason this positions sounds familiar.

Cullen9 may be bitter...but he is 100 percent correct.

I was the Sports Editor at the Torrington Register Citizen -- the sister paper of the Middletown Press (which is currently down to 3 employees btw) for roughly 10 months and the place is an utter disaster.

    STAY AWAY!!!

    I wasn't getting on Cullen9's case.

Unlike some who think you can't bring up real reasons why a job may not be good, I happen to think someone shouldn't be blindsided and be miserable.

    Ahem.

    Salary: $20,000 to $25,000 ($20,001)

The Middletown Press is looking for a (sucker) self-motivated (because the JRC will suck any motivation out of you), sports-minded (no shit) journalist to join its "digital first" (BLOGS!!!! OPEN COMMUNITY NEWSROOM!!! NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN NOBODY WILL EVER GET SHOT DURING A NIGHTLY NEWS MEETING!!!!) newsroom as the Assistant Sports Editor. Duties will include, but (sure as fuck) are not limited to:

    * Reporting at live sporting events (as opposed to dead ones), specifically high school sports (forget going to UConn, SYNERGY with New Haven!)
    * Shooting video clips at events with the ability to quickly upload/embed to the web (PAGE HITS!!! DIGITAL-FIRST!!!!)
    * Updating the Middletown Press' sports web page with new and relevant content (but not actual writing)
    * Utilizing social media (FACEBOOKTWITTERMYSPACEYOUTUBETWITTERFRIENDSTERMYSPACEMATCHDOTCOMCLASSMATESDOTCOMWHATEVERITISWEHAVETOBEHIP) and other web-based tools to publicize web content (but not actual writing)
    * Recording game scores from (drunk and/or barely literate) coaches on a nightly basis (because Middletown is a big fucking area for two people to not cover) and turning them into a legible scoreboard (good fucking luck) and roundup story for both the print and web editions (now you can cost kids scholarships on two platforms!).
    * Writing feature stories about local athletes (holy fuck, actual writing--who fucking wrote this ad? fire him or her!)

Candidate must have the ability to (die a little inside every day) work night/weekend hours. Qualified applicants should (run like fucking hell and change careers) possess a bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related field (as in, if you don't have a degree, that counts as a related field--what, zero is a number!). Sports reporting experience is required (BLOGGERS ENCOURAGED!!!!), while experience in digital media and social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) is strongly preferred (FACEBOOKTWITTERMYSPACEYOUTUBETWITTERFRIENDSTERMYSPACEMATCHDOTCOMCLASSMATESDOTCOMWHATEVERITISWEHAVETOBEHIP). Experience in photography is a plus (because we probably don't have a photographer anymore).

If interested (immediately commit yourself to an insane asylum), please send a resume, cover letter and 3-5 writing samples (because this is the closest you'll come to actually writing) to Sports Editor Dan Podheiser (not even he is protected come the inevitable day when this paper is produced entirely by community "journalists") at dpodheiser@middletownpress.com (again, we had to get rid of the P.O. Box, land line and computers, hope you enjoy typing stories on your phone, fucker).

And I didn't even need to call on the white courtesy phone. Excellent work, as always.
