Our long national nightmare is over.

Andi Petrini, who has been working on the desk since 2005, was named SE here today.

    Two hires with sports ties:

Andi Petrini will become our sports editor:

Andi Petrini has been named sports editor at the Daily Press Media Group. She will oversee the department’s online, mobile, social media and daily print efforts, and she will become the only female sports editor at the Tribune Co. Andi (with help from Lynn Burke and David Teel) has been filling in as sports editor since the beginning of the year. She has worked for the Daily Press since 2005, writing stories, designing pages and updating digital platforms. Andi won a first place in sports design from the Virginia Press Association for her work in 2010.

Mike Bambach will become the assignment editor. In the brave new world of digital, this is the equivalent of managing editor.

Mike Bambach is joining the newsroom on June 27 in the newly created role of assigning editor. He will oversee all content-gathering operations for the newsroom including sports, features and news. The editors of those departments will report to him. Mike has extensive experience in digital, video and print news operations and will oversee print and digital platforms. He is now an editor in the USA Today sports department.

    Well-deserved and long overdue

  5. Seconded...worked with Andi in Newport News, and always liked/respected her quiet confidence. She doesn't saya ton, but she's really good at what she does. It's also nice to see the staffers there (all veterans and good as all get-out) get to work with someone they already know. Congrats Andi. The DP sports section is in good hands.

Congrats, especially to Mike Bambach. A good guy who is leaving the Gannett world.
