The Bismarck Tribune, a 29,000 circulation award-winning daily located in the capital city of North Dakota, is looking for a highly motivated, creative sports editor to lead a staff charged with being the dominant source for LOCAL sports news in print and on its various digital platforms, including bismarcktribune.com.

This position is responsible for developing, coordinating and managing a thorough local sports report that ranges from the digital immediacy of breaking news and high school game updates to well-planned, long- and short-range enterprise journalism projects. The job includes directing a staff of full-time and part-time reporters, assisting in some sports section layout, including special sections and special events. We’re looking for a sports editor who understands the appetite for local sports goes beyond a box score and who can contribute new ideas, as well as add a little polish to excellent staff work. The Tribune is the sports source for high school sports in the entire central region of the state, six local high schools, three local colleges, two nationally prominent Universities, our NAHL Hockey franchise, the professional sports teams that are most closely followed, and much more.

The Tribune, offers competitive compensation, an excellent benefits package, and a great working environment. Interested candidates may apply on line at www.bismarcktribune.com/workhere.

Excellent sports staff. An editor, three writers and a copy editor on this sports staff. All five have at least 15 years of experience and one has nearly 40. I believe the editor/writers had been together with no turnover for 8 or 9 years.

They've always done a great job and Lou especially is very good. Good luck to him in Wisconsin! He's as good as they come.

It's a Lee paper, and it doesn't pay what it used to, which is ironic considering it's tougher to live in Bismarck with the oil patch pretty close. Apartments aren't hard to find, but decent priced houses are.

That aside, in terms of sports excellence in North Dakota, it doesn't get much better than the Bismarck area. A new high school is also being built right in town. State championships are fairly common for Bismarck schools.

The last SE did the semi-pro type stuff. He covered Bismarck Bobcats in the NAHL and the Dakota Wizards of the D-League, before they moved to California. He also did UFC and shared coverage of high school hockey and soccer.

    Good luck to all applicants.

It's going to be hard for the Tribune to replace Lou. He was excellent in most every way. He made sure that he had reporters who covered everything from A to Z. The only drawback is he may have given them too much freedom because it is a very veteran staff.

They could use a couple nudges in the right direction (I'm talking about improving layout and adding maybe a little more enterprise-style writing, which their people are entirely capable of) but all the pieces are there for the right person.

The paper is also hiring a new editor-in-chief, so it will be interesting to see if they hire that person first.
