    JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Sports Editor

    Description:
If you know scholastic and college sports in New Jersey, then you know about Hudson County, with its long list of traditions like St. Peter’s Prep, Hudson Catholic, Bayonne, and New Jersey City University. Here’s your chance to lead the coverage of these exciting sports programs for the county’s No. 1 daily news organization, The Jersey Journal.

The Journal is seeking a dynamic, experienced sportswriter to become its Sports Editor. Based in our Secaucus newsroom, located directly across the river from MetLife Stadium, you’ll have primary responsibility for The Journal’s sports section, writing and curating content about everything from football and cross-country to basketball and volleyball.

Interested? Please send a cover letter, resume, and six to 10 of the best stories you’ve written in the last two years to David Blomquist, editor and publisher of The Journal, at dblomquist@jjournal.com Sorry, but we’re only able to respond to inquiries in which we’re seriously interested.

The Sports Editor is responsible for coverage of Hudson County high school, college, and amateur sports published in The Jersey Journal and its affiliated website. He/she has the skill, insight, and knowledge to write authoritatively about local teams and players across the variety of sports played in Hudson County, from football and wrestling to soccer, basketball, baseball, and track. He/she will write columns, game stories, and features for print and digital platforms; post frequently on social media; collaborate with photographers, freelancers, and affiliated information sources; and design, lay out, and build pages for print publication.

    Required education, experience, and skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field required.
    • Minimum of two years of professional journalism experience strongly preferred, although applicants with less professional experience but strong college clips and/or posts will be considered.
    • Proven understanding of news and sports writing, journalistic ethics, and story structure, demonstrated by a portfolio of clips and/or digital posts about multiple sports.
    • Experience using social media to source and promote content.
    • Previous experience with print design and with layout tools such as Adobe InDesign is highly desired.
The Sports Editor is based in The Journal’s newsroom, which is in an office environment in Secaucus. He/she must have a current driver’s license and a reliable vehicle, as he/she is regularly expected to attend practices and games throughout northern New Jersey. The typical work schedule for the position is Monday through Friday, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a half hour each day for lunch.

The Jersey Journal, published Monday through Saturday by The Evening Journal Association, is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, physical or mental impairment, or any other category protected under federal, state, or local law.

Following successful completion of an initial probationary period, the Sports Editor is required by contract to join the NewsGuild of New York.
