SPORTS EDITOR: The (San Luis Obispo) Tribune, a 40K daily on California’s beautiful Central Coast, is looking for a sports editor to lead a great sports staff. The Tribune’s sports section was recognized in the 2006 Associated Press Sports Editors contest as one of the top daily sections in the nation. Candidates need to have worked in sports as reporters and preferably in an editing capacity on a sports desk as well. A minimum of three years’ experience in daily journalism is required. The Sports Editor will work with a staff of two reporters, a copy editor and some stringers to produce a report that is vigorous, alert, substantive and enterprising. An emphasis is placed on local collegiate and prep sports. In addition to producing a strong daily section, including handling design and layout duties, the editor is also tasked with getting good enterprise stories to the paper’s front page. We’re a McClatchy Co. newspaper and are committed to individual development and offer excellent benefits. San Luis Obispo is a terrific environment in which to live and work. It’s an area rich with outdoor diversions and unbeatable weather. We are located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, seven miles from the Pacific Ocean. Candidates should mail work samples and resume to: Devon P. Goetz, Human Resources Director, The Tribune, PO Box 112 San Luis Obispo, CA 93406-0112. Email: dgoetz@thetribunenews.com. EOE.

Staff used to be much bigger. A former SE left for an ASE/preps job at the Register, stayed less than a year and came back as an ASE. He's no longer there. Current SE has been there two years.

You're confusing San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz. You got the wrong guy.

a staff of four ... really? and a wonderful area ... where even the SE won't be able to afford to live.

Mile High is right: Melissa was on the desk in Fresno. And I was confusing Santa Cruz with SLO on the ASE, who isn't listed at the Sentinel anymore. These papers have not been helped by the KR/McClatchy/Singleton trades and consolidations. Is the early morning view from Morro Rock worth the small staff and barely passable pay? Perhaps.

The guy went back to Santa Cruz to work under the guy who had previously worked under him, then a few months later, he moved on to .... trying to remember ... Contra Costa??? Not sure.
