Sports editor, San Francisco Examiner

The San Francisco Examiner, an award-winning newspaper covering the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, seeks an enthusiastic, versatile Sports Editor to oversee all sports content in both print and online formats.

The Sports Editor oversees and coordinates all sports stories, covering all of the teams that matter to Bay Area fans. The Sports Editor works with freelance reporters and columnists on a daily basis and is responsible for:

- Managing storyboards and deadlines to ensure digital platforms are constantly updated with new stories;

- Assigning stories and coordinating coverage with reporters and photographers;

- Writing powerful stories and columns;

- Editing contributors’ stories on a tight deadline, collaborating with the production desk on print elements;

- Managing digital presence on website and social media channels;

- Maintaining relationships with teams — from the pro level down to high school — to ensure access and coverage;

- Developing creative strategies to grow digital readership.

The Sports Editor should exercise strong news judgment and have intimate knowledge of the history of sports in the San Francisco area. Our ideal candidate has a college degree in journalism or communications with at least five years of experience at a newspaper or other journalistic outlet. Candidates with less experience will be considered. Candidates in the Bay Area are strongly preferred.
