    Description:

    The Monitor is seeking to employ a full-time sports editor, overseeing our team of sportswriters in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. Applicants must show a passion for helping sportswriters cultivate their beats and develop their writing, as well as possess an understanding of newsroom management and draw from experience covering high school sports, collegiate programs, developmental and professional leagues. This individual will also be required to assist in sports coverage and may work as a general assignments reporter when needed.

    Journalists experienced in deadline writing, covering late-breaking stories and enterprise journalism, and who can record statistics, box scores and have a general understanding of high school, collegiate and professional sports activities and policies are encouraged to apply. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred but not required, as five to ten (5-10) years of experience in other newsrooms will also be considered.

    Together with The Monitor sports staff, this individual will be expected to oversee and assist in covering a region that’s home to more than 30 high school sports programs, developmental leagues and collegiate programs at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Range of coverage may also include hard news, policy, features and enterprise stories.

    To enhance stories, additional responsibilities may include assisting in the preparation of video and audio elements for multimedia packages. Expertise in web and social media news development and management is also preferred.
