    Sports Editor

The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to direct its sports coverage. We are an ambitious news organization with high standards, and we need an exceptional journalist to lead our efforts. This is an opportunity to make your mark. We aren’t looking for a caretaker to keep doing things the way we’ve always done them. We want someone with the talent and experience to reshape our coverage and presentation on all platforms. We want to do it all in our sports report – from covering high school games to undertaking major enterprise efforts and investigations. For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity. But you must be able to juggle a lot and turn on a dime. We want both breaking news and page one enterprise stories from sports. We want to be first on the web and social media, and we want to be the best and most thorough everywhere. We also have plans for a major digital initiative that our sports editor will lead, so if you find the digital environment intimidating, this job is not for you. The top candidates for the position will possess all of these qualities: You work with reporters as each story is conceived and throughout its development. You enjoy working collaboratively with your own staff and with other editors. You think visually. You see interactive and multimedia potential in every idea. You recognize the value of social media, and you engage with it. You work with a sense of urgency. If you are the best at what you do and share our zeal for ambitious journalism, this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. You will be part of Maine’s finest and largest newsgathering operation, and you’ll live in a region with an extraordinarily high quality of life. Newspaper or magazine editing experience is required. Send a resume and a few examples of your most stunning work you to Colleen Mitchell, Assistant to the Editor, Portland Press Herald, One City Center, Portland ME 04101 or by email to cmitchell@mainetoday.com. (Emailed applications preferred.) We are an EEO employer. Application deadline is March 14, 2013.
