Company: Journal Register Co. - 32c/share and dropping!
    Position:
    Sports editor
    Location:
    New Britain, Connecticut
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Not Specified
    Ad Expires:
    May 20, 2008
    Job ID: 909463

    Description:
A chain of daily and weekly newspapers in central Connecticut with a combined circulation of more than 100,000 seeks a sports editor with great technical knowledge, superb logistical and organizational skills, a deft hand at writing and editing, great ideas and people skills, an eagerness to take advantage of the Web and the confidence and ability to defeat every challenge that arises.

The region you’ll oversee with a staff of about a dozen (not including freelancers and photographers) includes terrific outdoor opportunities — everything from skiing to water sports on the Connecticut River — and cities that host ESPN, the Division I Central Connecticut State University and Wesleyan University, which has one of the premier athletic programs in Division III. Your coverage area includes the town literally midway between the stadiums of the Patriots and Giants and is ground zero in the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox. The city in which you’ll be based is the home of a semi-pro soccer team and the New Britain Rock Cats, a Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins with spring training in Fort Myers, Fla.

A love of community sports is a must for this job as well, though, and these are morning newspapers that oversee and share content with weeklies. Applicants must be willing to take on night and weekend hours, as well as have a strong hands-on work ethic and knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. The chain needs a leader gifted at layout, packaging, planning, preventing errors from reaching the reader and with good English and Associated Press style skills. Five years of experience in sports journalism, with at least some as a manager and editor, is highly recommended.

We’re looking for people able to start soon and get up to speed fast. Send resume and samples and/or clips to mlevy@newbritainherald.com or to Marc Levy, Executive editor,1 Herald Square, New Britain CT 06051.

  2. You do not want to be here. Even before JRC's problems, this was/is a bad place to be.

Some good guys in that office. That being said, there's a reason why they've passed on being the SE on multiple occasions.

No. I met two of them years back. Still consider them friends.

Mind you, I mean the writers. Could care less about higher-ups.

    Ahem.

    Description:
A chain (of fail) of daily and weekly newspapers in central Connecticut with a combined circulation of more than 100,000 (you should have seen what the Herald's circ was by itself 15 years ago, before we sucked up every weekly and daily in the area) seeks a sports editor (not really, we'll probably just freeze the position once the stock starts trading at negative three cents a share) with great technical knowledge (not really), superb logistical (can you do the work of an entire staff?) and organizational (again, can you do the work of an entire staff?) skills, a deft hand at writing and editing (what'd we fuckin tell you, can you do the work of an entire staff?), great ideas (that you won't be able to implement because this company sucks the life out of everyone) and people skills (are you good at telling people "no, sorry, we have no freelance budget"), an eagerness to take advantage of the Web (just throw the shit up there) and the confidence (we'll suck that out of you) and ability to defeat every challenge that arises (there is absolutely no winning the challenges at the JRC).

The region you'll oversee with a staff of about a dozen (not including freelancers and photographers...but it does include the entire newsroom staff) includes terrific outdoor opportunities (none of which you'll have the time or money to enjoy) everything from skiing (they're full of shit, the Southington ski area sucks) to water sports (golden showers?) on the Connecticut River and cities that host ESPN (don't be fooled, Bristol blows), the Division I Central Connecticut State University (New Britain is even worse and forget getting food after 9 pm) and Wesleyan University, which has one of the premier athletic programs in Division III (that no one at all cares about). Your coverage area includes (a whole shitload of towns now that apparently we're merging the Middletown and Bristol papers into New Britain) the town literally midway between the stadiums of the Patriots and Giants (neither of whom you will ever cover) and is ground zero (hey guess what? Ground Zero comments are still tasteless more than six years after 9/11) in the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox (neither of whom you will ever cover). The city in which you'll be based (sucks) is the home of a semi-pro soccer team (ohh, I think I just peed a little) and the New Britain Rock Cats, a Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins (whom you will never cover) with spring training in Fort Myers, Fla (which is a city you'll never see).

A love of community (LITTLE LEAGUE!!!) sports is a must for this job as well, though, and these are morning newspapers that oversee and share content with weeklies (synergy, motherfucker). Applicants must be willing to (sell their souls for zero satisfaction) take on night and weekend hours (get the divorce lawyer now), as well as have a strong hands-on work ethic (because you'll have no help) and knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop (not really all that important, we'll get the paper out either way). The chain needs (someone to fucking buy it) a leader (LEADER!!! BATMAN! I mean LEADER!) gifted at layout, packaging, planning, preventing errors from reaching the reader and with good English and Associated Press style skills (gee, that's all?). Five years of experience in sports journalism, with at least some as a manager and editor, is highly recommended (but by no means required, in the end, we'll settle for a kid who wrote one story for his monthly high school newspaper).

We're looking for people able to start soon (unless we freeze the gig, in which case you can go fuck yourself) and get up to speed fast (don't fool yourself, you'll never catch up). Send resume and samples and/or clips to mlevy@newbritainherald.com (hopefully we get it, Jelenic has us stealing wireless from the YMCA) or to Marc Levy, Executive editor,1 Herald Square, New Britain CT 06051. (No phone calls, Jelenic shut off the power right before he got his $4 million severance).

    Fucking brilliant, Beej.

  12. Is one of those guys Ken Lipshez (sp)? He does a great job covering the Rock Cats, Minnesota's Double A affiliate. Some fine players have come through there and Kenny's got a pretty good relationship with all of the.
