I sent my resume and haven't heard a word.

I hear they may be switching to a morning paper, and an 11 p.m. sports deadline, to boot.

  2. If it was filled, and the sports editor already split that fast, I would suggest that the newspaper get a ball and chain for the next one it hires...

And then watch the new SE eat through his own leg to escape

Sure they could. Does a bump to $26,000 sound good to you?

This is sad. Then again, Nevada, Mo., isn't exactly a step from the KC Star.

This is simply sad how many jobs in this industry are below $25,000. When I began in the 80s I was making $20K and can still remember the first daily calling me asking me to take a pay cut. "We pay $4.75 an hour with all the overtime you want, and we have the best barbecue in these parts," uttered the publisher.

Percentage-wise, it's gotten worse over the years. If you're above 40K in this business, you're probably crook-necked to the ceiling.

I've been offered $18k for SE gigs at nondailies.

I started my career making $19k as the No.. 2 guy on a nondaily.

    It's a joke.

how a job at this little shithole has generated two pages is beyond me.

FWIW, I sent my resume a day BEFORE the job was posted back in November.

Mind you, we're talking nine years as a journalist, 3+ as a sports editor at dailies.

    Haven't heard a peep.

And I am friends with someone close to the situation.

It's true. I think any paper with the balls to list 20-25K for the SE should be any man's kryptonite, even a proud Missouri native with too much experience. Maybe you're TOO qualified, and that's why they haven't contacted you. Or maybe they couldn't afford to make long-distance calls from the office.

either a guy speaking from his heart, or a guy applying for the job.

    you be the judge.
