Sports editor. If you want to want a career in sports journalism, spend a couple of years with us on your way up and build your resume. The News Herald is a six-day daily (S-F). We’re a heavily local community newspaper serving Burke County, population 88,000, from our base in Morganton. We concentrate on sports at four high schools (they produced both the NCHSAA male and female athletes of the year in 2009) plus a semi-pro football team, dirt-track racing, adults and youth in county rec leagues, Little League baseball and softball (the boys played in the 2004 World Series, the Junior League girls are 2009 state champs) and outdoor recreation. Sports is a one-person department here, but we have a large stable of freelancers and room for more if you can recruit, train and manage them. We’re a 9,000-circulation paper, but your work can have outsize exposure. As a Media General newspaper we share sports news with four area dailies and provide content for Morganton.com, a site that gets 1 million-plus page views per month. If you’re not already a sports reporter, assistant sports editor or weekly sports editor, you probably shouldn’t apply. Send cover letter and resume via e-mail to Steve Welker, swelker@morganton.com.
