Metro Boston (www.metro.us) seeks a web-savvy sports editor to produce a daily print sports section and build an online brand in Boston.

Duties include developing and managing a staff of freelance reporters and columnists and putting out the section nightly and supplementing the print edition with through expanded coverage online. Solid news judgment and proven design skills using Quark are required (we will be moving to InDesign in 2012, so experience there is a plus). Ability to work under intense deadline pressure is vital, including the ability to adjust on the fly.

Ideal candidate should be able to find ways to lure readers from other sections of the paper into sports and demonstrate the creativity and willingness to break away from the traditional elements of a sports page. This isn’t an entry-level job and at least three years of experience either as an editor or reporter at a daily newspaper is required, along with an acute knowledge of the Boston sports market. This position will also work with our sports editors in New York and Philadelphia to produce and contribute to shared national content and packages. This could be an ideal job for a copy editor/designer looking to put his or her own stamp on a section.

    Background and skills:
    - 3+ years newsroom experience
    - Solid news judgment and understanding of an online audience
    - Able to work quickly under pressure and balance multiple tasks
    - Attention to accuracy, detail, AP style
    - Experience with Web publishing tools and understanding of SEO
    - Blogging
    - Social media skills

Interested candidates can e-mail their resume, cover letter (must include salary requirements), design samples and three ideas on how to cover Boston sports in a non-traditional way to Managing Editor Ron Varrial at rvarrial@metro.us.
