I'm leaving for a position at the Biloxi Sun-Herald and my job will be coming open in three weeks.
It's a one-man outfit, so the hours are long. But the coaches are generally nice, the folks at the paper are good people and you will leave there with a good grasp of everything you can think of: copy editing, layout, budgeting, etc.

It's not a bad stop for someone wanting to move up from a weekly or run the show outright.

    PM me for details.

    Job posting here:

    Sports Editor, Enterprise-Journal, McComb, MS
    November 7th, 2006

Sports Editor wanted for immediate opening in 12,200-circulation afternoon daily in southwest Mississippi. The ideal candidate must be able to cover baseball, basketball and — most importantly — football, which is treated like a religion around here.

Organization skills and the ability to work under tight deadlines are a
must. Mastery of Quark Xpress and AP style are essential, as is strong
writing and editing skills and a solid news judgment. Our sports department is a one-man show. The newspaper has one staff photographer who has an eagle eye and covers most local sporting events, backed by a team of freelance sports writers and photographers. Must also be able to manage and recruit stringers, work with coaches, and write compelling sports features. This is a Tuesday-Saturday position. This paper’s primary sports coverage includes four high schools and a community college in Pike County, Miss., as well as about a half dozen other schools in neighboring counties and in nearby Kentwood, La.
Our sports pages also focus on the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss),
Mississippi State University, the University of Southern Mississippi and
Louisiana State University and the local kids who make good and get into
the NFL, Major Leagues or the NBA.
McComb is a little more than an hour’s drive away from New Orleans,
Baton Rouge, Jackson and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The cost of living
is low, the team rivalries are intense and opportunity is knocking.
Send resume, cover letter and clips to P.O. Box 2009, McComb, MS 39649
or to news@enterprise-journal.com or by fax to (601)684-0836.
