Sports editor, Martinsville (Va.) Bulletin.

    Martinsville gets zero real competition from either Landmark daily. When I first started at the N&R, I was working out of our Rockingham County bureau, and the business editor sent me to Martinsville to help out on a story about a textile plant closing. (Yes, boys and girls, gather around the campfire and let Uncle John tell you about the time when Martinsville had jobs.) Since then, the N&R's forays north of the border were to do lottery story when the pot hit nine digits. Now that N.C. has its own lottery, the only time we go past Ridgeway on official N&R business is when there's a Cup race at the speedway.

    I don't think Roanoke's ever has had a Martinsville bureau. The Times has offices in Richmond and Christianburg only, iirc.

    I'll take it on faith that we still sell papers up there. Circulation has scaled back in so many areas that I'm stunned we still truck the N&R that far north.
