So I'm curious ... were they not able to hire a sports editor after the walkout or did they lose whomever they hired?

I believe they hired someone after the walkout, but then that person subsequently left. I think the previous SE was there around four months.

I know a basketball coach who spent many years in Liberal. He said his friends always wondered if he was in the witness-protection program by coaching and living out there.

Since he left, he's lost about 25 pounds and is doing better health-wise than he has in years.

There's a newspaper war there. The SW Daily Times has a new competitor- the High Plains Daily Leader. Odd to two see two papers struggling over a town where a large segment of the population is not literate in English.

The Daily Leader was started by the crew that walked out on the Southwest Times ... which is no longer a daily. And the Times' web site is amazing! (it's a link).

Wow, that's awesome. Hopefully they'll post a "Gone Fishin'" animated gif pretty soon.

Oh, I forgot to mention ...

First year you won't have paid holidays, if past behavior at other papers in this chain is typical. You'll still have the days off, unless there's something to cover, but you won't get paid for it.

Is Liberal the town with the world's largest hand-dug well? Or is it the town with the world's largest ball of twine?
    I forget.

The hand-dug well is Greensburg, now known for the F5 tornado.

Liberal actually has the Wizard of Oz museum.

Somebody kill me for knowing that.
