3 of the best (read: fulfilling) days of my career were spent in Cruces leading up to, and covering, local football team in the 4A title game. Day began on the sideline at Aggie Stadium to watch Cruces v. Mayfield in the 5A title game. Went to experience Cruces-Mayfield up close and personal; it's one of those crosstown rivalries; at least it was in '02. Packed stadium (35K) and kick-ass game won by Cruces 17-14.

That night at Field of Dreams, Oñate (the "other" Cruces school) beat my team, Goddard, 17-14 in a slugfest.

I went to the Sun to bang out the story then made the 4-hour drive back to Roswell.

Don't think I've ever been so wrapped up in the emotions of one team like I was Goddard's during the drive. If I were to list the top 10 football teams I covered from Long Beach to Bellows Falls, Goddard '02 would be No. 1.

And I know a talented journalist from Cruces. Some of y'all might know her too ...
