    Position:
    Seeking Sports Editor
    Location:
    La Grande, Oregon
    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Negotiable

    Job ID: 1576081

    Description:

The Observer of La Grande, Ore., has an immediate opening for a sports editor at its three times a week newspaper and 24/7 website. The top candidate must have a passion for community sports and have sports reporting experience. We cover nine area high schools, though our main focus is on La Grande High School, as well as sports at Eastern Oregon University, which competes in the NAIA Division I Frontier Conference for football and the NAIA Division II Cascade Conference for all other sports. The Observer sports department is a two-person department with the possibility of hiring freelancers. The sports department also handles the paper’s Outdoor section.

This is an opportunity to make your mark. We aren’t looking for a caretaker to keep doing things the way this paper has always done them. We want someone with the talent and experience to reshape our coverage and presentation on all platforms. We want to do it all in our sports coverage — from covering high school games to undertaking major enterprise efforts and investigations. For the right candidate, this is a fantastic opportunity. But the right candidate must be able to juggle a lot and have the ability to turn on a dime. We want both breaking news and page one enterprise stories from sports. We want to be first on the web and social media, so if you find the digital environment intimidating, this job is not for you. The top candidates for the position will possess all of these qualities: able to work with reporters as each story is conceived and throughout its development; work collaboratively with your own staff and with other editors; think visually; see interactive and multimedia potential in every idea; recognize the value of social media and engage with it; and work with a sense of urgency. This is an opportunity for someone to come in and make this sports department something special.

La Grande is located at the base of the Blue Mountains and is home to abundant outdoor recreation. It is also a farming and ranching center. The La Grande Observer publishes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is part of Western Communications. Advancement and management opportunities within a topflight newspaper organization are very realistic for employees with a proven track record. Solid benefit package includes competitive pay, life insurance, flex-spending account, paid vacations and mileage reimbursement. This position will be filled as soon as possible.

Qualified applicants should email cover letter, resume, 3-5 clips, and professional references to Managing Editor Andrew Cutler, at acutler@lagrandeobserver.com.
