Iowa City Press-Citizen seeks a high-energy, strategic-thinking sports editor to direct coverage in print and the digital space.

This editor should have a passion for college and high school athletics, as The Press-Citizen is located in a sports-savvy Big Ten town. The sports editor should understand how die-hard sports fans are using digital and social media to stay abreast of the latest news – be able to help lead our newsroom in innovative uses of those media to connect with Iowans. In addition, the sports editor will help produce and encourage strong breaking news coverage, watchdog reporting, non-traditional storytelling and the development of stories with broad appeal for the sports section and the front page.

Qualified candidates will have proven sports writing and digital experience. Experience leading a staff is a plus. The sports editor must have excellent organizational, time-management and decision-making skills, flexibility and proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Must exhibit solid news judgment, a strong sense of fairness and high ethical standards. Position requires proven ability to collaborate with a range of partners and find solutions to challenging problems. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work well with individuals and teams within the company and with the public.

The Press-Citizen offers a competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, generous vacation policy, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and more. The Iowa City Press-Citizen is committed to diversity and proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and acceptable motor vehicle record.

Not to completely threadjack this, but I'm not too sure he deserves much sympathy for this one.

No matter what the subject matter is or who the company is, if you get news from the bosses about something coming down the line, you tell one of your employees prematurely and they go blab about it with a competitor in an effort to make your company look bad, you're going to get fired just about 100 percent of the time.

    And you'll deserve it, too.

If ever there was a "Release the hounds" for a want ad, this is it.
