My sister has lived in Hagerstown the past 40 years. It was also the second home for 18-year-old Pennsylvanians looking for beer in the '70s. So I know it well.

You're less than five miles from the Pennsylvania border here. Interstate 81 has less than 15 of its miles in the state of Maryland; this is it. Pennsylvania-Maryland-West Virginia in quick succession.

That said, I've always felt the Mason-Dixon influence is strong. You feel a different, more Southern vibe as soon as you get across the PA-MD border. Hagerstown definitely has its dark areas, but for the most part, it's a warm, clean community of about 40,000.

The best thing to be said about sports around there, I've got to say, is its proximity to the beltways. The only professional sport in Washington County is the Sally League baseball team in town. Only local colleges are D-II Shepherd (W.Va.), about 10 miles out of town, and Hagerstown Community College is a pretty good JC athletic program.

The high school teams don't seem to do too well on the state level, at least not in the major sports. The Herald-Mail does stretch up into Franklin and Fulton counties in Pennsylvania for a handful of schools; there is a bit more athletic success up there with Chambersburg and Greencastle.

What are the chances this can be filled with a young guy with less than three years of experience but someone who's motivated?

Only one way to find out. No snark intended; it's just that someone closer to that situation would have to make that call. It's a 27,000 AM daily, 32,000 on Sunday if that helps place it in the big picture.
