JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - SPORTS EDITOR IN WYOMING

    Date Posted June 11, 2015
    Location FREMONT COUNTY, Wyoming
    Job Status Full-time
    Salary $30,000 to $35,000
    Website http://www.dailyranger.com

    Description:
COVER SPORTS OUT WEST. (The earlier e-mail problem with his ad has been fixed!) Our daily newspaper's sports editor is leaving us after 12 year as his wife takes a job out of state. An opportunity is born. Come take charge of sports coverage at our family-owned community daily (S, T-F), county seat weekly (W) and small-market weekly (Th) in central Wyoming. You will do it all — cover some choice beats, assign and coordinate sports news and feature coverage with two excellent, experienced part-time writers, work with an outstanding , sports-loving photographer (and shoot your own photos as often as you like), manage the weekdaily sports page and Sunday sports section (yes, including Quark XPress pagination), write a sports column when you're in the mood, and build and maintain good relationships with our local sports community.

We cover nine local high schools at the varsity level, ranging from Class 1-A (smallest) to Class 4-A (biggest). They don't all field teams in every sport, but at minimum boys and girls basketball is played at all of them, and two biggest schools compete in everything from tennis to cross country skiing, with plenty of football, soccer, track and field, wrestling, golf and volleyball in the picture. No school baseball or hockey, but there are active club teams in both, plus summer softball, rodeo, hunting fishing, outdoor sports and rec. We pay attention to sub-varsity teams and tournaments when we can, and there's a community college competing in round-ball sports, golf, XC and rodeo. There are opportunities to cover the Wyoming Cowboys from time to time as well.

We take our sports coverage seriously, beginning with a super busy editor/publisher who views local sports as just about the most important thing we do (he usually covers a beat or two as well). We are an AP and Tribune Media subscriber, but those are space-filling supplements to our comprehensive local coverage.

There are conference and state champs every year, usually more than one, with college signees, all-stars, a few locals in the pros, and seasonal all-county dream teams that we pick and publicize.

It's a busy job, but not an overwhelming one thanks to coordination, planning and able contributions from the rest of the staff. Tuesday through Friday days (leave early if you're covering a game that night), plus a Saturday afternoon-night shift. Sunday and Monday off. The keys are enthusiasm and effort, which have been the great strengths of our current man. We need a sports editor who will love it, live it and own it. Salary, paid vacation and holidays, 401(k)

We live in one of the one of the fine places on Earth, Wyoming's Wind River Country. Look it up if you have any doubt. Town 11,000, county 40,000, state 575,000. This is not big-city living, which we happen to think gives us an advantage. Apply now, work soon. I'm not too keen on heading to Wyoming, but reading the job ad is more inspiring than 90 percent of the ones we see on SJ.
