Des Moines Register Media seeks a high-energy, strategic-thinking sports editor to lead an award-winning sports staff and to direct coverage in print and the digital space for The Des Moines Register and DesMoinesRegister.com.

This editor should have a passion for college and high school athletics, as The Register is located in the heart of the Big Ten and Big 12 country. The sports editor should understand how die-hard sports fans are using digital and social media to stay abreast of the latest news – and the ability to lead our staff in innovative uses of those media to connect with Iowans. In addition, the sports editor will encourage strong breaking news coverage, watchdog reporting, non-traditional storytelling and the development of stories with broad appeal for the sports section and the front page.

Qualified candidates will have proven expertise leading a staff – and be able to demonstrate that they can maintain The Register’s high standard of sports journalism. The Register was an APSE Triple Crown winner in 2011. Iowans are passionate about their sports, and this leader will be charged with delivering a top-notch product – online and in our print editions.

The sports editor must have excellent organizational, time-management and decision-making skills, flexibility and proven ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-oriented, rapidly-changing environment. Must exhibit solid news judgment, a strong sense of fairness and high ethical standards. Position requires proven ability to innovate and find solutions to challenging problems. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrated ability to work well with individuals and teams within the company and with the public.

Des Moines is Iowa’s rapidly growing capital city with fast growing suburbs and a downtown in the midst of a building boom: a downtown library, arena, entertainment venues and a blossoming urban neighborhood of lofts, shops and restaurants. Yet it remains a comfortably sized metro area with reasonable commutes.

Des Moines Register Media offer a competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, generous vacation policy, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and more. Qualified candidates should apply by visiting: https://performancemanager4.successfactors.com/sfcareer/jobreqcareer?jobId=6443&company=Gannett&username=.

Des Moines Register Media is committed to diversity and proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and acceptable motor vehicle record.

Any idea where the current SE is going? If I remember right, he's not an old guy ...

Bryce Miller is taking over as sports columnist because Marc Hansen took a buyout.

Could be an interesting dynamic for whoever the new SE is, being the supervisor of a sports columnist who used to run the section.

  7. Bryce Miller is good people. Met him at a national convention in Minnesota about 5 years ago. He actually pointed me to this website back when I was at a small daily and looking to move up.

Just checked — I still have the email. July 21, 2008.

Wonder if that means USAT is now looking for a senior editor for motor sports?
