    The award-winning Duluth News Tribune is searching for a sports editor to oversee a staff of three sports reporters in Duluth, Minnesota. With beautiful Lake Superior as a backdrop, sports-crazed Duluth offers myriad coverage opportunities, including the two-time defending men’s hockey national champion Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, Grandma’s Marathon, college and high school sports, sled-dog racing, mountain bike racing, cross-country and downhill skiing, curling and auto racing. There are many different sports to cover in the Duluth region all year-round.

    ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Directs all activities and employees within a newsroom sports department for print and online.
    • Supervises employees, establishes schedules, conducts performance reviews, interviews, hires and provides training.
    • Writes or assigns staff members to write articles and reports in AP style for print and online.
    • Meets regularly with editor to assist in planning and long-range goals.
    • Ensures utilization of all news sources, such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services and other reporters.
    • May be responsible for overseeing and writing blogs or columns.
    • Recommends budget needs and capital expenditures.
    • Represents newsroom at community activities and at professional newspaper meetings.
    • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communication or related field.
    • Newsroom and editing experience preferred.
    • Two or more years of related newspaper experience.
    • Some management experience preferred.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of human resource/supervisory rules and policies.
    • Knowledge of AP style, the Freedom of Information Act and libel laws.
    • Strong organizational and communication skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written skills to include computers.
    • Ability to be flexible and work under pressure and deadlines.
    • Ability to effectively present information to employees, management and/or groups.
    • Ability to promote teamwork and interdepartmental cooperation.
    • Ability to motivate others.
    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

    • Must possess a valid driver's license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
    • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Mass Communications from a four-year college or university.
    • Experience in news/sports reporting.
    • Personnel management and design and presentation of newspaper pages.
    • Requires superior organization skills.
    • Salary commensurate with experience. Position reports to the Editor.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license with a driving record that is insurable by the company.
