    Job Status: Full-time
    Salary: Not Specified
    Website: http://www.thegazettecompany.com

    Description:

The Gazette, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is seeking a night sports editor to help lead our award-winning sports team.

As The Gazette's night sports editor, your primary mission is to bring the best sports content and presentation to our audience on a daily basis. You do that by coaching reporters, collaborating with our photo and design teams and helping come up with new sports coverage ideas. We’re seeking a section that goes far beyond game coverage, and dives into participatory sports and extensive enterprise about sports-related issues.

You’ll be looked at as a solid closer, able to juggle a variety of tasks on tight deadlines, and help improvise on a regular basis when plans need adjustment. You’ll also be a champion of great storytelling and enjoy coaching a very established team.

You have proven news judgment yourself, but know that innovative ideas come from all corners including our audience. You hold yourself to high journalism standards but have the capacity to work with journalists of all experience levels to coach them all to continue growing. You must be organized, creative, provide meaningful feedback and think big on a regular basis.

You’ll also have a chance to take on special projects – helping plan for special sections around college football or other in-depth multimedia projects.

You thirst for the chance to take on special efforts -- like helping plan for special sections or in depth multi-media projects. You should be highly attentive to the details, a strong editor and someone who is comfortable in experimenting with various storytelling techniques, as well as working with design, photo and digital editors to plan art and maximize impact and delivery of stories.

With your combination of journalistic chops and office humor, you've left a clear impression with those you've worked with before that they'd be glad to cross paths with you again someday. If these qualities describe you, we'd like to talk to you about joining our team at Iowa's second largest newspaper.

    Our organization:

Our news operation is converged and combines digital, print and broadcast for The Gazette, TheGazette.com, KCRG-TV9 , kcrg.com, as well as several niche sites. Our company has a strong tradition of being independent and is owned by a trust for the benefit of its employees. The Gazette is delivered to 16 Eastern Iowa counties each morning. The majority of our news team is focused on enterprise reporting, and we have a strong spirit of collaboration with other news outlets. While we’re focused in Cedar Rapids -- Iowa’s second-largest city – we have bureaus in Des Moines, Dubuque and Iowa City. The region is rich with things to do outside of work hours.

    Qualifications & Requirements:

Our ideal candidate will have the skill to mentor multimedia journalists and collaborate with other newsroom leaders. A Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of related experience are required. In the absence of a bachelor’s degree, candidate must have at least 10 years of related experience.

    To Apply:

Applications for this position are due May 14, 2015. Please include links to writing/editing samples or design ideas in your application.

The website lists Ryan Suchomel, formerly the Sports Ed at the Iowa Press-Citizen, as the Night Sports Ed at the Gazette.
Anyone know why he left, or is leaving?
