JournalismJobs.com - Job Listing - Exciting sports editor opportunity

    Date Posted September 24, 2015
    Industry Newspapers / Wires
    Location Cape Girardeau, Missouri
    Position Editor
    Specialty Sports/Outdoors
    Job Status Full-time
    Salary Negotiable

The Southeast Missourian and semoball.com seek a leader who can inspire others to produce high quality content for print and the web, manage day-to-day operations and have the ability to launch and oversee exciting new projects.

Semoball.com is a regional sports site that covers 57 high schools, features work from the staffs of five daily newspapers in the Rust Communications family and hosts an ESPY-style awards show each year that draws almost 1,000 attendees and featured Jennie Finch as the guest speaker at the show in July. The semoball.com website is in the middle of a dramatic, responsive redesign for all sizes of phones and tablets. You could be part of molding the future of the product.

The Southeast Missourian is a six-day-a-week newspaper that has been honored by the APSE, Local Media Association and Missouri Press Association many times in the last five years. Your staff at the Missourian will feature three talented full-time reporters and one part-time employee, but the semoball.com staff is three times that size. This role, and our sports coverage overall, is poised to grow.

We need someone who understands the importance of social media as well as story-telling, someone who loves planning special sections months in advance as much as he or she enjoys planning and guiding the day-to-day grind of beat writing. The candidate should have a good design sense for print and online products. The Missourian has an award-winning photo staff of three to help make your coverage special.

This position will allow you to prove yourself as an editor and give you an opportunity to make a home in our Cape Girardeau office or to gain the experience needed to move on to opportunities at larger organizations. Two of our most recent sports editors have moved on to significant roles at metro papers.

Cape Girardeau, a quaint but bustling town on the Mississippi River, is a 90-minute drive from St. Louis and a three-hour drive from Memphis. It is home to Southeast Missouri State University, a Division I university that competes in the Ohio Valley Conference. The sports editor would be expected to write a regular column and engage the audience.

We’re looking for a candidate with at least five years of experience in sports journalism with some management experience at a mid-size or larger newspaper and can demonstrate a track record of growing reader engagement. We’re seeking a talented person who is never satisfied with the status quo and wants to do something big. We want someone who understands today’s sports fans and how they want their sports information delivered. Does this sound like a good fit for you?

Email a cover letter and resume to editor Bob Miller at bmiller@semissourian.com.
