    The Bedford Bulletin, a 4,900-circulation weekly newspaper located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Roanoke and Lynchburg, VA, is seeking a sports editor. Candidates must be dedicated to producing a quality sports section with balanced and in-depth coverage. The Bedford Bulletin offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) and paid time-off benefits.     Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent experience
    • Knowledge of AP style and libel law
    • Good photography skills and knowledge of Photoshop
    • Proficient in the use of Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, to design the sports section on a weekly basis
    • Have experience scheduling stringers
    • Experience and drive to use social media
    • Possess flair to drive new ideas for local sports coverage
    • Ability to work independently with superior results
    • Be available for night and weekend games coverage
    • Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation
    Essential Functions:

    • Write crisp, accurate and compelling stories, headlines and photo captions
    • Write a mixture of game stories and feature stories for the sports pages
    • Develop relationships with area coaches to facilitate the flow of information to the newspaper
    • Shoot clear and compelling photos
    • Design the sports section using InDesign
    • Design and lay out weekly sports pages and other pages as needed
    • Load stories and photos onto the website
    • Serve as a backup for other members of the news team
    • Meet established deadlines of the newspaper
    This is currently an exempt salaried position.
