    Description:
The Baltimore Sun seeks a dynamic editor to lead sports coverage. Baltimore is a terrific sports town, where loyalties run deep for two major-league clubs, college teams and high school rivalries. It’s the birthplace of Michael Phelps and home of the Preakness. Newsy, creative, audience-aware sports coverage is key to furthering The Baltimore Sun’s status as the pre-eminent news source in the region.

This person would be responsible for leading a team in assigning, editing and producing content that serves our audience on multiple platforms, drawing on keen news judgment and savvy use of analytics. This editor would ensure that our reporting takes fans inside the clubs, to see what’s really happening, but also steps back to look at the big picture of how sports intersects with issues of business, society, justice and race. They would guide the team in further building source relationships to break news and in producing insightful enterprise, analysis and quick takes that readers can’t find anywhere else.

    • Supervise editors and reporters to develop enterprise pieces providing contextual news and information
    • Ensure content is edited quickly for digital distribution
    • Use expertise and good judgment in assigning content in the most appropriate formats, such as stories, takeaways, photo galleries, video, audio, timelines, charts, graphics and interactive tools
    • Ensure that headlines are optimized for search engines and social.
    • Help manage the timeliness and presentation of any topic area or digital channel assigned to him/her.
    • Use audience metrics/analytics and keen news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategy.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field, or equivalent experience
    • Excellent writing and editing skills
    • Prior experience as a supervisor
    • Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system. 1-2 years of professional Web site production experience is preferred.
    • Fluency in Web technology and online content publishing required
    • Must work well in a team environment, have the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment, and adapt constructively to change
    • Must be technically savvy and able to quickly master new processes and software tools used for content editing and production
    • Personal or professional experience using Web-based social networks is preferred, or must become adept at using them.

The Baltimore Sun is committed to building a diverse newsroom that reflects the people it covers and the audience it serves. Candidates are encouraged to highlight new perspectives they can bring to our team.
