Sports Editor at weekly paper in Indiana

The Standard is hiring a full-time sports editor as soon as possible. The Standard is located in Boonville, Indiana near Evansville and it covers all of Warrick County. Your job duties will be to cover all sports for three area high schools, as well as a very little bit of youth and other community sports. The high schools are all pretty competitive in at least one sport. Castle High School is very competitive in football, basketball and baseball almost every year and has had strong girls and boys soccer programs, too. Boonville and Tecumseh both boast strong softball programs, as does Castle. It's probably the best county in the state in terms of softball.

Being that it is a weekly newspaper, you will have to do everything from writing to photography to page design. You will also have to help out in other areas, like news feature writing and other general assignment stuff. The paper just recently designed and launched a new sports website, warricksports.com, so you will have to maintain that, but it's pretty easy to do.

The job is a great one for a recent college graduate looking to get his/her start. The publisher and editor pretty much give you the freedom to fill your sports pages as you see fit, so it really allows you to work on your writing and whatnot as long as you are willing to work hard. Pay is not great, but it is a really great place to work. And Evansville is just 10ish minutes down the road, so there is plenty to do in your free time.

To apply, send your resume, cover letter and clips to managing editor Tim Young at tyoung@warricknews.com.

I am leaving this job to take a new job at a daily newspaper in South Carolina, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Pay will most likely be between $20k-$25k. And the usual suspects of benefits are offered.
