I'll say this... the pay here is not great.

If you really care about getting a great opportunity to be a Sports Editor in California, or to just be a Sports Editor, it's a good job. The staff is HUGE for the circulation size -- 6 reporters plus a fulltime columnist and a fulltime paginator -- so a real good section can get put out every day.

Toby did some great things when he was there, both because of his work ethic and the resources. Some of the writers put together pretty extensive packages because, unlike most places, you actually have time (and lots of space) to write those kinds of stories.

And, being in the LA market, you can get credentials for nearly every game -- Rose Bowl, MLB playoffs (provided the Dodgers/Angels don't suck) included.

As an alum, one who never broke bread with Toby as we set out to do, I echo this. They take most sports -- from preps to pros -- very seriously and do a thorough job in covering them.

Speaking from personal experience, albeit a decade removed, I also echo the fact the pay won't be great. Then again, if you're going to live in SoCal on a journalist's salary and you're not working for the LA Times, there are worse places to live and work.

Best of luck, Toby. Sorry we couldn't break bread.

    Why the reposting?

    An underwhelming applicant pool?

Toby, how long were you there? When I was in Texas you were in...Missouri, right? That wasn't very long ago.

Interviewed for this position in December over the phone. Editor seemed nice. Pay wasn't what is needed for a professional with a family, especially in Southern California. I believe the days of a sports editor in his/her 40s or 50s is going by the wayside. Every paper wants to hire a 20-something that makes $30K. :(

And barely on the edge of LA at that, and San Berdoo County near Edwards AFB to be correct.

    Twenty months.
Good position for someone who wants to work with a large, mostly young staff with a lot of space to work with compared to most papers this size.
Anyone who wants more info can PM me.

    Yeah, reposted again today: http://www.journalismjobs.com/Job_Listing.cfm?JobID=1223078.

Maybe the pay, as Chili Polar Bear suggested, is limiting interest.
